Overview
Elijah is a major prophet in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Ahab. His ministry confronts idolatry, calls Israel back to covenant faithfulness, and displays God’s power in dramatic public and private settings.
Key Scripture
Drought and Provision
Elijah announces drought during Ahab’s reign and is sustained by God at the brook Cherith and later through the household of a widow at Zarephath.
Mount Carmel
1 Kings 18 records Elijah’s confrontation with the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. The LORD answers with fire, demonstrating that He alone is God. Afterward, Elijah prays and rain returns to the land.
Flight and Renewal
Following Jezebel’s threat, Elijah flees into the wilderness and journeys to Horeb. God sustains him, speaks to him, and commissions further prophetic work (1 Kings 19).
Justice and Judgment
Elijah confronts Ahab over Naboth’s vineyard and announces divine judgment against the king’s house (1 Kings 21).
Departure and Legacy
In 2 Kings 2, Elijah is taken up in a whirlwind, and Elisha continues his prophetic ministry. Later Scripture recalls Elijah in prophecy, the Transfiguration, and teachings about prayer.
Research Notes
Elijah’s story spans historical narrative and later biblical interpretation. Compare the accounts in Kings with Malachi, the Gospels, and James, distinguishing the details each passage explicitly states.
